Spirituality on the Web: Sites to Explore and Sites to Bookmark Explore and share the way you can use the web to enhance your spiritual life. Dr. Thomas Power, the theological specialist librarian at the John W. Graham Library at Trinity College, University of Toronto, introduces many Wycliffe and Trinity students to the power of the Internet, and this morning he will show us how to get the most out of it. Bring your favourite religious-based sites to share and discover the best of the web. Was the Word ... A new four-part series led by Andrew Asbil, Incumbent, will continue what was begun this fall with In the Beginning... Was the Word will be offered Thursday evenings in February from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on February 2, 9, 16, and 23 in the board room. The format for each workshop will follow the pattern begun with In the Beginning. Each session will start with a shared meal followed by Bible study, a presentation or a guest speaker, and group discussion. During Was the Word, participants will have a chance to delve a little deeper into the themes of sacramental living, interpretation of scripture, personal devotion, and social justice. Newcomers are encouraged to take In the Beginning and then follow with Was the Word. At the same time, Was the Word is open to all, long-time pilgrims or newcomers alike. Dinner provided. Our Father Jesus taught the disciples how to pray with words that are familiar to all Christians. John Campbell, Director of Music, delves into the text of the Lord's Prayer and the many musical settings that have been composed for this beloved prayer. From simple plainsong to Stravinsky, this particular prayer has the power to stir emotions and promote an awareness of faith. John will recall congregational settings that have been used at the Church of the Redeemer and look forward to ones that may be used in the future.
Best Books for Lent Just before Lent, we'll be joined by three authors represented by the Anglican Book Centre. The panel will offer readings to introduce new authors and topical publications, chosen to provoke thought and reflection during the upcoming season. The authors and their books are:
Working with Spirit: Spirituality in the Workplace, by Lucy Reid and Fred Evers. Lucy Reid joins us to tell how she and Fred Evers explore the place of spirituality in the workplace. The book also offers a compendium of resources to provide practical ways of engaging spirituality to meet challenges in the workplace today.
Practical Prayer: Making Space for God in Everyday Life, by Anne Tanner. Anne Tanner leads workshops offering spiritual guidance, and draws on the tradition of Christian prayer to offer practical ways of making space for God in our lives. The book gives clear instruction on various forms of meditation, speaking to both those experienced in prayer, and beginners.
Emotional wisdom: A Journal of Prayer and Reflection, by Robert Maclennan. Emotions run the gamut from joy to despair. Robert Maclennan leads the reader in a spiritual exploration of human emotions, helping us to make deeper contact with our own souls and with God. At the Heart of the Gospel: Suffering in the Earliest Christian Message In this two part series, Ann Jervis, Honorary Assistant Priest and Professor of New Testament, Wycliffe and Trinity Colleges, University of Toronto, offers a glimpse into the book she is completing, which will be published by Eerdmans in 2006. In the first session Ann will discuss what some of Paul's letters say about the suffering that is particular to believers in Jesus Christ, and the suffering experienced by humanity that does not know Jesus. In the second session Ann will ask how Paul's words might be relevant to our life of faith. Covenants New and Old Lenten Bible Study, led by Dr. Abigail Young, addresses a single compelling theme inspired by the Lenten lectionary. Over five evenings, Abigail will examine the three Old Testament covenants with Noah, Abraham, and Moses as well as the promise of a new covenant in Jeremiah. Then the focus shifts to the New Testament for an examination of the fulfilment of that promise. This series is part of an ongoing study group led by Abigail, who holds a Ph.D. in the history of Biblical interpretation. To read the text of Dr. Young's remarks, please click here. Lenten Series: Faith on Film In Lent, Thursdays are film nights at Redeemer. Stephen Reynolds, Senior Associate Priest, leads discussions of five films that deal centrally with questions of faith and the way it is lived by ordinary and extraordinary people. Screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. in the board room. Light refreshments provided. Redeemer is licensed to show these films: I Confess (1953 - Alfred Hitchcock), starring Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter - murder and the seal of the confessional, set in Quebec City. Black Narcissus (1947 - Powell/Pressburger), starring Deborah Kerr - a melodrama of Anglican nuns in the Himalayas. Jesus of Montreal (1989 - Denys Arcand) - a modern passion-play in modern Montreal. "The Song of Bernadette" (1943), starring Jennifer Jones - the story of Bernadette Soubirous and the shrine of Lourdes. Amadeus (1984 - Milos Forman), starring F.
